Six ways we’ve made money online – by Steve Gould & Anne Marie Kingsnorth
Whether you’re on a pension and find your income savaged by the exchange rate, or a worker wondering where the next job is coming from, we are all in the same boat, struggling to make the pennies go further. How nice it would be to make a few more! For me the internet has been the answer. In this article I’ll show you six ways my partner Anne-Marie and I have made real money online over the past year:
1) Selling things.
Most of us have odds and ends lying about the house that can be sold for cash. I have a friend whose main source of income is buying children’s toys from jumble sales and selling them online. Perhaps there are other things you can think of available in Spain that would sell abroad like mantillas, the decorative silk or lace scarves worn over a high comb that Spanish women wear at weddings.
Ebay (www.ebay.co.uk) has been the dominant website in this area for some time. You will find when you sign up that you may be redirected to the the Spanish Ebay site which uses Castellano. Better if you can use the UK site but then there issues with postage. Make it clear in your adverts that you are sending from Spain to avoid confusion. If you can handle the language also try www.segundamano.es which is popular with Spanish buyers .
Top tip: Advertise your sales outside of Ebay. I sold some comics recently and before the auction I spent some time visiting comic related websites and getting emails of enthusiasts.- when the auction went live, I emailed them telling them my comics were for sale giving the Ebay address. Made a killing!!

2) Writing
I’ve been using www.associatedcontent.com to publish articles like this one! AC are really after articles that are short and pithy that web sites will buy to improve there content. AC has also started to pay money for videos. They will pay royalties and sometimes an upfront payment if your article is reviewed and accepted. Beware though the payments are generally small. You need to be writing and submitting over a dozen small articles a day to be making real money out of this.
Top tip: A good article will be published on a website where its function will be to attract google adverts. Try to write using words that people will search for in Google so for example if your article is a recipe for chicken tikka kebabs, try and use words like curry, Indian and tandoori to attract more click-throughs.
3) Advertising through affiliate marketing
Being an affiliate means you sign up with a company and agree to try and sell their products or services, usually by making a link to them on your website with some kind of tracking code. Then if someone clicks through your link and eventually a sale is made you will earn a commission. Amazon.com is the past master of this and even tried to copyright the linking mechanism at one stage. Now there are lots of affiliate sites, too numerous to mention. Search google for “affiliate marketing” for more deals.
Top tip: Probably the most lucrative affiliates are poker sites as these may give a proportion of the gambler’s spend and in some cases, not just as a one-off but for the duration of his online career as a gambler. I have known someone make three thousand pounds in a month from such programmes.

4) Poker
A friend of mine in the industry told me that poker is a hard way to make easy money. It is gambling so there are no guarantees. Try www.pokerstars.com, www.fulltilt.com, or www.ultimatebet.com. There are usually tutorials on how to play and to manage a bank roll – use these to learn how to play. Before risking your cash, practice using freeroll/play money games. Bet low and be cautious if you want to maximise your chance of not ending up a loser! (BTW I made 58 U.S cents playing poker whilst writing this article by playing in the background, ignoring low hands and just betting on high value pairs, Aces and picture cards! Every little helps!)

Top tip: Avoid Texas Hold’em as there are too many skilled players out there who will take your shirt. Learn to play Omaha Hi/Lo as there are less masters of the game and the pots are bigger.

5) Monetize your website
Sorry for the American spelling but that is what you will find if you google the topic. The basic idea is that if you have a website you can put some code that will bring in adverts which will earn you money if someone clicks on them. The big player here is Google Adsense. Google ads are dependant on keywords, so if you have the right kind of website that people are searching for you can make a lot of money. There are many other ad placement programmes – find them by googling “monetize your site” or” CPC” (cost per click).
Top tip: Don’t spend any of your own money setting up domains or websites. Use blogs or free web space as there is a lot out there. Make sure you content is relevant and accessible before approaching the advertiser. Change the content as often as possible to generate better rankings and more visits.

6) Sell yourself as an outsourced resource
On www.elance.com you can set yourself up selling a service to companies. Typically you may be selling translation, admin, computer programming, or any service that can be outsourced. Anne Marie has won several contracts translating using this site. You will find yourself competing on the world stage against people beavering away for peanuts in Asian countries. Be aware though that price isn’t everything and your fluency in English coupled with any good references you have from UK companies may engender trust online that counts for a lot.
Top tip: Elance shows how many contracts you’ve had and client feedback. If you show no clients and no feed back you will have trouble getting work. Get a friend to buy work from you, even if it’s only a tenner to get the ball rolling.

Kill Poker Blind Doublers

I play a lot of poker, especially on Pokerstars. Typically I'll play on a micro Hold'em table that has a 2/4 cent blind. Often you'll find there is a player who will, as part of his tactic, double the blind before the flop.

Now this drives me NUTZ!!! Don't get me wrong, its not the money, I'm an all in sort of guy, but I've joined the table because I know what the blinds are. If I wanted 4/8 cent blinds I'd join a higher table. What I don't want is to wait to go round the table a second time to see who is going to match the blind. Most people don't like to bet blind on small tables anyway so all this tactic does is make them fold and keeps money off the table that may otherwise have reached it.

If you feel the same way, do what I do - move tables - there are plenty of them!

Happy Birthday to Me!!

Big 47 tomoz - expect it will rain - it always does!! Not had too much luck with birthday weather in the past. Last year was good. Went to a BBQ and sat out until the wee hours, but normally even here in Spain the summer ends and down comes the rain!!

I think inclement weather must be a problem for a lot of people whose birthday's fall on certain dates. There must be people out there who would love a birthday bash on the beach but it isn't going to happen in Blackpool if you were born in say, January - I shiver just to think about it!

Anyway, for this reason I think we should have two birthdays. An official one like Queen Elizabeth, god blesss her, and an unofficial, alternate birthday, for which we choose our own date each year. Hell I could swing it so it falls on my summer holiday - brilliant!
